birthday decadence in blurry pictures
February 4, 2008 by traderjanki
To celebrate my birthday, we went to dinner at Al Di La!
Cold water came in curved vessels:
A chandelier glittered from the ceiling:
The kitchen peeked out behind red curtains:
Beet ravioli: a luscious beet bared her lips under a sprinkling of poppy and Parmesan.
Truffle and ricotta tortelli: pillows of milky ricotta bathing deep in truffle bliss.
Creamy polenta. Addictively smooth texture. We also ordered the swiss chards, lemony, juicy, and charred from the grill, and Yukon potatoes with parsley, olive oil, and lemon. Both excellent.
Chocolate ice cream with whole toasted hazelnuts tucked into a tall glass of fresh whipped cream & a pear cake with rich chunks of melted dark chocolate.
I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday dinner. The ambiance was welcoming, as a neighborhood restaurant should be, but with touches of magic: the sparkling chandelier, hanging like a big candle; the red curtains; the glossy wine bottles lining a shelf in the wall; the exuberant painting of purple flowers. Nothing was too formal or frightening. And the food, impeccable and gorgeous, fulfilled my birthday dinner fantasies.
Al Di La is at 248 5th Avenue, in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
